20 inmates involved in fight at Montana State Prison

DEER LODGE – About 20 inmates were involved in a fight at Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge over the weekend.

The fight occurred at around 8 p.m. Saturday, March 31 near the high security gym. Prison staff responded immediately and the institution was secured, according to public information officer Linda Moodry.

Five inmates received medical attention for superficial injuries. Moodry says inmates cooperated with staff and no staff members were injured.

“It was not a riot situation and lasted about four minutes. This incident is under investigation,” Moodry said.

They don’t call this a “riot” but they sure are keeping it low key.  Twenty inmates is not a riot, it’s when the prison population has an uprising. The way these prisons are being managed in Montana the inmates have become hopeless of ever getting out or ever having freedom again due to corrupt parole board actions.  Inmates that are angry at being taken by cattle rustlers and branded with a DOC brand.  You cannot expect that this won’t breed discontent. What do they have to lose by showing how frustrated they are? They figure they are not going to let them out anyway. What would be worse if all of these prisons decided to have an uprising all at the same time. Trust me, the water is boiling, I’ve been around DOC too long…you can see the handwriting on the wall. We need to have change, humans are not cattle. You don’t rustle humans and brand them. It is morally and legally wrong.

  1. They also try to make it out to be “Gang “related so they get federal funds.

    • Makes you wonder why it wasn’t in the news more. Barely saw anything about it. Most inmates didn’t even know. I wonder if this is what they are going to end up saying after the investigation, “the incident appears to have been gang related so we will be requesting more funds.”

If inmates have a problem with prison they shouldn’t commit the crimes that land them there. MSP has a very professional staff. This incident lasing only 4 minutes shows me that things are running pretty smooth out there.

    • I suppose you did not read in the newspapers about the 5 female staff that had sex with one of the inmates at MSP? That is not professional. That is a felony of all crimes. Why did they cover it up instead? Why are officers speaking with other inmates about the cases of other inmates? Making derogatory comments? Are they trying to stir up trouble? The incident only lasting 4 minutes was more about the inmates stopping it. This fighting is nothing about a riot by all means. Trust me, I know what a riot is. Many times I have found in this field that an incident is used for another agenda.

The parole board has been corrupt since ATLEAST 1988 when they released convicted murderer john yankaitis after only 4 years in prison ! hmmm …. wonder who got paid !

    • So are you telling me that they released a inmate that was convicted for murder after only 4 years but all these others keep getting flopped no matter how little the charge nor if they are a model inmate? I wonder who is getting paid also.

My comment goes toward our corrupt parole board and yes i trruely believe they have been very unfair to the inmates. Take for instance there was a person in pre release i wont say where, but he was doing communittioy service and thrrough hearsay no evidence was taken to jail over this, at his hearing probation and parole and whoever else that attended this ” hearing trial” had no documentation of written statments to the alleged nor could they provide any evidences besides hear say, ect. Therfore he was put into msp over this, quite a while back he was complete of all recomendations and after his third review has been denied every time with no reason of as to why, so in a nutshell they should have gotten a prope and

    • They are doing this quite frequently. It seems this is no longer about rehabilitation. This is about money they are making. Montana has lost it’s freedom due to corrupted officials.

What can we do to let our voice be heard? This not only gives inmates a sense of hoplessness but it is equally difficult on the wives and families. In the beginning 3 years ago I spent a year with endless amounts of time trying to get someone to listen and further check into an alligation made toward now an inmate, that was just hearsay and unfair, but no one will listen or look into it. Its really disheartening, I think the problems lies more than just the DOC it trickles down to state employees and authorities as well, its not about fighting and protecting the innocent its about an individual with a number and a price tag attached.

      • In the Montana area there are now organizations popping up all over the place to fight and expose what is going on. There is a Law and Justice Committee Meeting on June 21st and 22nd of this month. You can attend to represent your loved ones or friends that are incarcerated here without justice. These organizations are growing and starting to work together. More Montana citizens need to know what is going on and where there tax paying money is going too. We have also started networking with other organizations nationwide.

Where and what time is the meeting going to be?

    • At the Capitol in Helena on both days. It starts early in the morning. I’ll look up the schedule.

      • carrie kiser

Thank you. What can i expect from this meeting?

  6. None Ya Bizness

I don’tfeel sorry at all for people who commit crimes and have to pay a price for it. Why are convicted felons considered victums in these posts? They stole, hurt, raped, murdered, etc and deserve punishment. Try to argue that fact. You can’t, criminals need to be punished.

    • No one never said that “criminals” don’t need to be punished. They do. Apparently you haven’t read all of the website because this is about those that are wrongly convicted, those that work in the state departments and are corrupted that are committing crimes yet they go unpunished. We are also talking about being a nation with the highest incarceration rates in the world. Because we have too many in prison that should not be there.

  7. Hey- None of Ya Bizness, Your lucky that you or someone that you love has never been trapped in the currupted Montana State justice system and it sounds to me like you don’t know the first thing of what everyone is talking about here! These articles are about ‘Human treatment’ not about whether they are being punished for crimes! People in glass houses should not throw stones & be careful what you wish for. I applaud these folks for coming out with the truth about what is going on here.

  8. Stefan

U people are truly clueless. You should be thankful that we have people to work in an environment like a prison. I would be willing to bet most of you nay sayers wouldn’t last a month! Right on None ya! It’s obvious these other people don’t think about the victims of the crimes.

    • Stefan and None ya, apparently you have not been researching what is being said, which does show who is clueless. Many working to expose what is going on has worked with victims, a few have been victims themselves in the past and information throughout this website is from those that work within DOC, all long term employees. Let’s not say who would not last. This has nothing to do with unjust convictions, or wrongly convicted. What if you were sitting behind bars, when you should not be there and NO one would listen to you? I hope our world is better than that. Quit being so closed minded. There are some really great CO’s and should be commended.

    • I applaud mejustice! There is NO justice in the justice system if things continue to not ‘work right’ within the Montana correctional system. As far as the persons (they are human beings) whom have paid for their crimes are being ‘housed’ at the Montana tax payers expense because no one is paying attention to how these parole boards are being run. Lets just say- If they had an outsider (unbiased person) whom could make a proffesional decision based on ALL of the correct information given as a whole. Lets say maybe someone to ‘audit’ past case parole histories and see if there truly is a pattern here. Working in the prison system you can become hardened and tired (I know) and I have seen some uneducated tired and tainted/corrupt individuals working there- I am just saying that the time should be accordingly to fit the crime. Yes, there are those that should never be let out– I am not disputing that but then what about those that have paid their dues–so none ya maybe you should get a new job and let the proffesionals do theirs. Not all inmates are murders, rapist and victimizers- so why is bouncing a check a longer sentence…..Hmmmm.

  9. And even those that deserve to be in prison and some should never be let out because of their crimes does not give us the right to torture them. Being locked away is their punishment.

  10. None Ya Bizness

For those of you who say I don’t know about the prison system in Montana I have this to add. I worked as a supervisor at MSP for several years, not as a CO, but as a supervisor. I have seen every inch of that property and most of the others in the state. I have first hand knowledge of training techniques and the additudes of the majority of the staff. Not every staff member has the highest of moral character but most do. There is no corruption in the system. Are there problems, sure. Is the system perfect, no. Do inmates get tortured, no, not even in the least. Are there innocent people in prison, I’m sure there are, but very few, less than .01 percent.

  11. No one said that you don’t know about the prison system in Montana sir. Supervisor’s of any correctional facility deserve to be respected and honored for the job that they do- until they do not deserve to be respected any more- just as any CO should. What I am saying (I can only speak for myself) is that there seems to be an UN-justice on the part of a committee of individuals (parole board) (chosen for their outstanding citizenship-no one sat down for 20 mins with these people and made a decision) taking into their hands the decision of whether or not an inmate has served enough time. Now, I believe that these appointed board members should be individuals who deal with these inmates on a regular basis- who know whether or not an inmate has ‘served his time’ or has abused/used the system to their own advantage. We are talking about overall good people who have done wrongful things, but if they have served the time and cooperated, changed their habits and worked hard at reforming themselves- mind you like the system itself- they are not perfect either. They may get into a fights or do something because of the intimidation of prison life or do something because they miss their families. What I am saying is take into account ‘over all’ how the inmate has served his time. I think that it is torture being in prison longer than is necessary away from your family- when most shouldn’t be.

  12. Well, first hand knowledge of the staff at the prison states there is corruption abounding within the department of corrections. Sounds like you are yet another person that is covering up issues and glossing it over. It is a fact that staff has had sex with inmates and continues to have sex. It is a fact that there are not enough teachers to teach all of these classes that DOC is wanting to continue having implemented with adding more. It is a fact that inmates cannot even get into these classes. It is a fact that suicides happen on a regular basis. It is a fact that it is officers or vendors that bring in contraband. It is a fact that the prison now does not allow a segment of the inmate population to have visitors. It is a fact that the purchasing agent over the phone system has set the ridiculous rate for the families to have to pay. It is now a set fee. It is a fact that many that have needed medical care did not receive it and ended up worse off by the time they did or others that have died. It is a fact that inmates are not being released and even judges are becoming upset that DOC and the BOPP have seemed to become their own kingdom. There are too many staff, officers, families and inmates saying the same thing for this to be isolated. But most importantly too much documentation. As far as their being wrongly convicted…start doing your research and not just spit out numbers that clearly shows you have not been educating yourself on this subject. Because what you are stating is laughable.

Prison should be like it was in the 30′s, busting big rocks into small rocks. No working out in the yard,no t.v.’s no radios with guards and a warden who will put their boot in your ass when you give them static. For some of these convicts prison isn’t so bad, when life on the outside gets to tough for them they just go commit another crime and get sent back for three hots & a cot.Prison should be pure hell,a place you don’t want to go back to.But for far to many of these three time losers, prison is the easiest life they have ever had.I shed no tears for these punks & say bring back the rope & gallows.Hang’em & hang’em high.I am the brother of two former Montana State convicts and I feel no sorrow for those two loser ether. It’s no mystery why the US has crime through the damn roof & why we have so many repeat offenders. The only thing worse then a convict is a bleeding heart liberal. If I had my way death row cells would be empty…because they would already be in the bone yard.

    • Actually, all of us working on this are not liberals we are conservatives. When something is broken in the system and you know about it without a doubt and people are suffering, you stand up and do something! It’s called integrity! I don’t care what political party you are from or from what view you take…liberal or conservative. It’s not the way to operate. I am sorry to hear about your brothers but it is not right to lump all in the system like them. That is like women lumping that ALL men are bad or men lumping that ALL women are bad because they have had a few bad experiences. Have some balance, read the articles. Find out what is going on in your state.
